Fledgling Band Soars Above The Local Scene
Name: ELove
Band: GRIND
Working Years: 10
Home Base: Syracuse
Together a mere 6 months GRIND has generated chat at the Syracuse.com BBS and gotten several fan reviews at the Syracuse Bands site. One of the handful of local bands attempting to bring Central New York into the new millennium GRIND brings with it a very hard, but distinctive sound. I hooked up recently with the bands unofficial frontman, Elov and had a brief talk about the band and its music.
Elov was employed by the sound company that worked with, what was then, the original GRIND. The band needed a singer, he decided to audition and got the job. The gig soon turned into one of those "legendary" rock and roll stories; he got the role and the original members all quit.
But Elov was hooked and wanted to keep things going. Along with friend, associate and bass player, Fuz, he helped to hire a new lineup. The two placed ads in local publications, handed out flyers and spread the word as best they could. Soon they added Todd on lead guitar, Justin on rhythm guitar and Joe on drums.
To date the bands mantra has been
promote, promote, promote. Fuz and Elove have done everything they can think of to get the GRIND name out in the scene, and so far it has paid off. They did some on-air promo with TK99 and got a positive online review from Lidia Pierce for CNY Music and Art. As soon as they got one successful gig they d move on with promo to the next. And yes, keeping with the GRIND new age of rock strategy, the band has utilized the internet to its fullest potential.
Be prepared Central New York, this is not your fathers hard rock. The band covers Korn, Godsmack, Tantric, Limp Bizkit, Rage Against The Machine, and Fuel. The group is working on original tunes but as "Mr. Love" is one to say, "you have to play for yourself and for your audience, if you dont play for yourself, then you cant play for your audience." In other words, they want to establish themselves first and theyre just learning to play off one another, the originals will come soon enough.
GRIND debuted at Arenas Eis House in Mexico. Since then they worked The Brickhouse,Fulton, and last month's Backwoods Bash and as have palyed as far away as the Rock and Roll Preserve in Utica.
Things are always changing with a freshly hatched band, but GRID is on the right track to make an impact. If you want to check out something new (for a change), GRIND can be seen Saturday, July 20th, at Bleachers in Liverpool and Im sure they will have many more shows to come. -- The Dude
