Cracker
"Kerosene Hat"

Original Release: August 24, 1993

All the talk of Camper Van Beethoven in last month’s book review got me started listening to one of favorite bands once again, Southern California’s Cracker. What does on have to do with the other? Around 1990 CVB’s frontman, David Lowery left the group and started anew with high school pal Johnny Hickman and Cracker was born.

Keroscene Hat is Cracker’s second album, recorded in 1993. Their debut self- titled work put them on the alternative map with hit Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now). The Hat was a million sales revolution. Low is the first and probably most played tune on the album. Movie Star is a fast paced, sardonic portrayal of the hollowness of fame and beauty with frantic guitar riffs and great lyrics.

Get Off this is a surprisingly catchy song that utilizes the best voice box effect since Peter Frampton. It is a more than obvious response from Lowery to critics that say he sold out with the new band. The album’s title track is classic Cracker presenting eccentric flare with just the right amount of smart-assness.

Two stand out songs on this record are Take Me Down To The Infirmary and I Want Everything. Both songs veer from the sarcastic, raucous themes of the other tunes and get pretty serious. These are themes that any alternative fan has lived, for sure. Everything highlights some increadible songwriting talent from this band that often goes ignored. It is an achingly beautiful song.

Nostalgia is another wistful dirge to modern life. But, Sweet Potato is another surprise upbeat tune. You can dance to this shouting tune with its rockabilly inflections. Lonesome Johnny Blues is just plain hillbilly at its alternative best. Let's Go For A Ride would end any album appropriately, but listeners are in for a nice revelation with a great Grateful Dead cover of Loser.

For the curious, patient, and perhaps bored, there are four more tracks to be found at the end of the CD. Songs total 99, but keep listening and you’ll be treated to Euro-Trash Girl, a song that became popular despite its hidden placement. Plus, there are three more of the usual Cracker outtakes that are there for your pleasure.

The Cracker site has tour info (they recently played in Buffalo) and lots more info. Their latest work, Forever is said to be one of the best since this one. There are also some great links and references to Camper Van Beethoven and lots of pics and fan content.

Often described as country-tinged garage rock this album is as good as it gets. Imaginative lyrics, great guitars, nice off-tone vocals, humor and sarcasm, all in one neat package…it doesn’t get much better than this.
