It’s not just hype when I say that I’m consistently amazed with the new breed of genres that is coming out of Central New York. Hip Hop is something that is not readily associated with the area, but its here along with everything else. This month’s profile of a new Hip Hop duo highlights that fact. I spoke with jerimi, half of the Day Glo Crazies, about the duo’s CD project, their recent UMTV promos and other things Music 315. The Day Glo Crazies’ CD project is going better than anyone could have predicted and is surpassing even the goals jerimi and cristl had started out with. The tracks have begun to migrate towards the Industrial end as recording has progressed. They have about six or seven tracks done so far. "Hallucinations" is one of the earlier recordings which reflect the early focus of the project. "Certified," reflects the newer feel of the project’s future. Since starting they have added live drums, much more guitar, and combined forces with Rich S. of HemorRhage. Rich has added lots of stuff using Clavia’s Nord keyboard, made famous by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Writing is being done as they record which is contributing to the length of the project. Day Glow Crazies CD is tentatively scheduled to be finished in Spring ’03. The plan is to get the CD done and then move on to live performances. Has it been hard in this area to get live performances? Yes, but with exceptions. The response to the duo has been much better than you would think. Of course, it is usually a younger crowd that they are giving a preview, but surprisingly once people hear the tracks, they are very enthusiastic. jerimi lists her major influences as Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs and Harmony, and Project Pat. Not so much for the words and content but for the lyrical style and wildly inventive vocal skills of each band. Lately she has revisited ‘80s favorite such as Motley Crew, White Snake ("go figure"), Depech Mode, Duran Duran, and Skid Row. Local favorites include Dogs On Mars and Thunderosa, both Syracuse favorites, as well. Throughout the years both jerimi and cristl have been in other bands. jerimi played drums in a Ska band a while back, which is unusual since she told me she’s not much of a big Ska fan. cristl was a singer before coming to the CNY area. Both also worked in a couple of metal bands. Like many new bands the Day Glo Crazies have been busy on the Internet. They’ve started a Street Team and the idea seems to be going quite well. The site initially attracted about 20 people from places as far as Texas, Kentucky, Alabama, and California. So far The Team has passed out flyers with web addresses and they have really gotten around. Recently when jerimi went to peddle flyers at a local retail outlet, the owner told her "yeah, we already have those and I know about the band." From organizing a street team to slapping themselves silly for a commercial spot this duo knows how to promote their band. cristl recently did a spot for the wildly popular local video showcase UMTV. She can be seen slapping herself continuously for about 30 seconds with various sound effects added. Since the clip has aired everywhere she goes folks walk up to her and slap themselves. Another promo is due out soon featuring jerimi and her eye; we’ll see what that one leads to. The Day Glo Crazies have started a new trend it seems, and I’m sure jerimi and cristl have much more ahead of them.
